Oiling fills surface-reaching fractures in emeralds (and occasionally other stones) with colorless oils or resins to reduce visibility of the breaks and improve apparent transparency. The treatment is traditional for emeralds and considered stable but may require periodic reapplication if the filler dries or leaches out. Detection involves fluorescence under UV light, residue analysis, or microscopic observation of gas bubbles or flow lines in the filler. Full disclosure is mandatory; oiled emeralds trade at a discount compared to untreated stones of similar appearance.
